Saint Mary Magdalene: Equal-to-the-Apostles and Myrrh-Bearer of the Orthodox Church

Saint Mary Magdalene, honored as Equal-to-the-Apostles and Myrrh-Bearer, was one of Jesus Christ’s most devoted disciples. She came from Magdala in Galilee, which gave her the name “Magdalene.” According to the New Testament, Mary was not a sinner—as is often misunderstood—but suffered from a serious illness. Jesus healed her by casting out seven demons, and in gratitude, she followed Him faithfully.

Mary Magdalene was a witness to Christ’s Crucifixion and the first to proclaim His Resurrection. After His Ascension, she remained in Jerusalem, serving the early Christian Church. Later, she traveled to Ephesus with the Apostle John, where she lived out her final days and was buried.

Her Holy Relics are venerated in several Orthodox monasteries on Mount Athos: her right hand is kept at Dionysiou Monastery, her incorrupt left hand at Simonopetra Monastery, and part of her left foot at Esphigmenou Monastery. Additional relics are preserved in the Monastery of Saint George in Feneos, in Sparta, and in major Roman Catholic basilicas in Rome, Marseille, and Vézelay, France. Her feast day is celebrated on July 22 by the Orthodox Church.
