Description

This handmade wooden icon of Saint Gerasimus of the Jordan honors one of the most revered Orthodox Christian saints of the 5th century.

Born in Lycia to pious and humble parents, Saint Gerasimus devoted his life to asceticism and spiritual work. During his time in the Holy Land, he founded a coenobitic monastery where monks practiced strict ascetic routines, eating only dry food for the first five days of the week. Known for his hardworking and ascetic spirit, Saint Gerasimus became a model of Christian virtue.

According to church tradition, he tamed a lion, a miracle reflecting his holiness. He passed away on March 4, 475 AD, during the Patriarchate of Anastasios I of Jerusalem. The present monastery of Saint Gerasimus, built in the 19th century, stands on the site of the original monastery he founded, while a fragment of his holy relic is kept at the Monastery of Prousos in Evrytania. The Orthodox Church commemorates his memory every year on March 4.

This handmade icon is crafted with care from quality wood and makes a meaningful Orthodox Christian gift, a beautiful addition to home prayer corners, shelves, or altars, and an inspiring piece of religious art for any collector of saints’ icons.
