Description
Saint Phanourios the Great Martyr was unknown to the Christian world until the miraculous discovery of his holy icon on the island of Rhodes between 1355 and 1369 AD. The icon revealed his name and depicted him as a young Roman soldier holding a cross and a lighted candle, symbols of faith and divine illumination.
Surrounding the central figure of Saint Phanourios, twelve scenes of his martyrdom were painted, testifying to his suffering for Christ. Although no historical records exist regarding his life or martyrdom, the power of his icon led the Metropolitan of Rhodes, Neilos, to build a church in his honor.
The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates Saint Phanourios on August 27, and he is especially venerated as the patron saint of Rhodes. Saint Phanourios is widely known among the faithful for his intercessions and spiritual guidance, and his icon is a symbol of hope, faith, and divine revelation.
