Virgin Mary Paramythia Icon – Handmade Greek Orthodox Wooden Icon
This unique Orthodox icon represents Panagia Paramythia (Virgin Mary the Comforter), a miraculous image of the Theotokos venerated at the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. According to tradition, this icon was not created by human hands, but appeared miraculously by Divine Grace in the 14th century.
In the year 1320 AD, pirates had surrounded the monastery to plunder it. As the monks prepared to open the gates, the icon of the Virgin Mary came to life, and the Theotokos warned the Abbot and the Fathers not to open the door. Her divine voice saved the monastery. From that day forward, she became known as Paramythia, meaning “She who comforts”, for the serene expression on her face that brings peace and hope to believers.
This handmade Greek Orthodox wooden icon is crafted in the traditional Byzantine style, and makes a deeply spiritual addition to any prayer corner, church, or as a heartfelt Christian gift.
