Handmade Wooden Icon of Saint John the Russian – Traditional Religious Artwork – Perfect Gift for Orthodox Christians / Greek Orthodox Icon

Saint John the Russian was born in southern Russia, in present-day Ukraine, in 1690 AD, into a pious family. He was baptized a Christian at a young age, and his life was lived in accordance with the requirements of Christianity. During the Russo-Turkish War, he was enlisted in the Russian army, and heroic actions were performed by him against the enemies of his homeland.

He was taken prisoner during the battle for the recapture of Azov and was brought to the village of Prokopio in Cappadocia, where he was given to an Aga. In that place, he was forced to live in a dirty stable and was subjected to severe torture. Yet, great patience was shown by John, and the hardships were endured with unwavering faith in Christ.

His torture was brought to an end when a plate of hot food was miraculously sent by the Saint to his master in Mecca, Arabia, which led to a change in his master’s heart.

In 1730 AD, his soul was surrendered to God, and his body was buried with great honors by the inhabitants of Procopius. After three and a half years, his tomb was opened by the faithful, and his body was found to be incorruptible and fragrant. It was reverently transferred to the village church, where many miracles were performed for both Christians and non-Christians.

Following the Asia Minor catastrophe, the holy relic of the Saint was transported to Chalkida at the expense of the Papadopoulos family. In 1930 AD, a magnificent church was built in Neo Prokopio of Evia in his honor, where his holy relic is still kept. His memory is commemorated by the Church each year on May 27.
