Saint Panteleimon the Great Martyr and Healer – Biography and Legacy

Saint Panteleimon the Great Martyr and Healer was born in Nicomedia at the end of the 3rd century AD to a pagan father and a Christian mother. After his mother Eubula passed away during his early childhood, his father Eustorgius took charge of his upbringing. Panteleimon was sent to study medicine under the renowned physician Euphrosinos, where he gained extensive knowledge and was known for his intelligence and virtuous character.

Alongside his medical studies, Saint Panteleimon developed a deep spiritual bond with the elder priest Ermolaos, whom he visited daily. Miraculously, Panteleimon resurrected a child who had died from a viper bite through the power of Christ, leading to his baptism by Ermolaos. Following his baptism, he devoted his life to helping the poor and healing the sick without accepting payment, a selfless act that angered the city’s doctors and led to his betrayal.

Saint Panteleimon boldly confessed his Christian faith before Emperor Maximian, a fierce persecutor of Christians. The emperor condemned him to brutal torture, and ultimately, Saint Panteleimon was martyred by beheading. The Orthodox Church honors his memory every year on July 27.

Today, Saint Panteleimon is revered as the patron saint of several regions including Florina, Kato Nevrokopi, Paranesti, Drama, and Tilos. His legacy inspires countless Orthodox Christians worldwide and is celebrated through religious icons, prayers, and spiritual art.
