Dormition of the Virgin Mary – Handmade Greek Orthodox Wooden Icon
This beautifully crafted Orthodox icon depicts the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a major feast of the Christian Church celebrated every year on August 15th. According to sacred tradition, the Virgin Mary was informed of her passing by an angel three days before it occurred. She prepared in deep prayer on the Mount of Olives, surrounded by divine grace.
When the time came, not all the Apostles were in Jerusalem. Miraculously, a divine cloud transported them from across the world to be by her side. They laid her holy body in a tomb in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Apostle Thomas, who arrived late, asked to venerate her body. When the tomb was opened three days later, it was empty—a sign of her resurrection and assumption into Heaven.
This sacred event, known as the Dormition of the Theotokos, is honored as the “Easter of Summer” in Greece and celebrated with great reverence and splendor.
Our icon is handcrafted in Greece using traditional Byzantine techniques on solid wood, making it a meaningful religious gift or a valuable addition to your home prayer corner, church, or collection of Christian art.
