According to Orthodox Christian tradition<\/strong>, the toparch of Edessa, King Abgar<\/strong>, suffered from leprosy. When he heard about the miracles performed by Jesus Christ<\/strong>, he sent his messenger Ananias<\/strong> to Jerusalem with a letter, asking the Lord for healing.<\/p>\n As Ananias listened to Christ\u2019s teaching, he attempted to capture His likeness on paper. Seeing this, Jesus asked His disciples for water, washed His face, and wiped it with a linen cloth. At that moment, His Holy Image was miraculously imprinted on the fabric<\/strong>, creating one of the first Acheiropoietos Icons<\/strong>\u2014an image \u201cnot made by human hands,\u201d known as the Holy Mandylion<\/strong> or the Image of Edessa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Ananias brought the sacred cloth back to King Abgar, who was instantly healed<\/strong> upon receiving it and embraced the Christian faith<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Holy Mandylion was preserved for centuries in Constantinople until it disappeared in 1204 AD<\/strong>, during the city\u2019s conquest by the Crusaders.
